Program Overview
The Transformative Education certificate is consonant with Antioch University’s mission and values. Transformative education situates us not as passive inheritors and recipients of our world but rather as attentive and inquiring agents of change - changing who we are, what we are with each other, and how we live in and with this world. Such a project in education requires no less than a paradigmatic shift in educational relations – including conduct, teaching, learning, leadership, curriculum, subject matter, schools and other learning environments, resources, and cultural, social, political, economic, and ecological contexts. Every required course and field experience will be rooted in disruptive & liberatory pedagogies, social and environmental justice, and democratic orientations. In the first instance, practice will inform theory. This inter and transdisciplinary program will recursively address fundamental problems and questions in education, schools, and other contexts while practically, and experientially, embedding this inquiry in concrete teaching-learning situations. Relinquishing comfortable, easy, and settled answers and conclusions, educators will leave with reframed, informed, and nuanced experiences, understandings, struggles, questions, collaborations, and explorations in their learning, work, and lives. The program will strive to equip educators with the joy of working with passion, ingenuity, and wonder, and an unquenchable thirst for learning.
This is a three-semester online program. The program enrolls in the Fall or Spring or Summer terms.
