Business and Management Studies Major and Minor Areas of Concentration

The Business and Management Studies Concentration (BMS) at AULA is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of the global economy while addressing pressing issues such as diversity, sustainability, and the role of technology in business. Interdisciplinary course work in the theory and practice of socially responsible business management prepares students for careers as entrepreneurs and managers of small businesses and corporations, as well as public and nonprofit organizations.

The curriculum emphasizes leadership, ethics, and economics within a social justice framework. Students are prepared to become leaders and agents of change in community-based organizations, businesses, and local community initiatives, applying management principles in ways that promote equity, accountability, and collective well-being.

Students must complete a minimum of 40 credits for a Major Area of Concentration, and a  minimum of 20 credits for a Minor Area of Concentration. The faculty recommends that at least one half of the credits counted toward the concentration be upper division.

Pathway to Antioch University Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program

The Pathway (also known as Fast Track) offers qualified Business and Management Studies students the opportunity to save time and tuition costs while progressing from undergraduate to graduate studies in Antioch’s fully online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.Pathway students can take up to 9 semester credits/13.5 quarter credits of courses that count towards graduation requirements for both their bachelor’s degree and their master’s degree.

Concentration-related Core Courses

Students in the Business and Management Studies Concentration are advised to build the following core courses into their programs of study to the extent that scheduling allows.

Emphases

The BMS concentration offers the option of an Emphasis (Nonprofit Studies, Social Entrepreneurship) within the major area of concentration. Students choosing to do so should take a minimum of 15 units of the following core courses in the area to complete the Emphasis within the 40-unit concentration. Note that the emphasis is not available within a BMS minor area of concentration.

Electives

In addition to the core courses listed above, an array of elective courses is offered each quarter. A representative sampling of elective course offerings includes:

Internships

Students should incorporate at least one internship into the design of their program of study in consultation with their advisor. Students can select an internship site from pre-existing opportunities available through Antioch, or propose a new internship site related to their particular interests and goals. An internship could also entail developing new learning in the student’s current job setting for activities such as designing a training program, implementing new management information systems, or researching alternative means for marketing a new product.
