Whether this is your first term or you’re a longtime Antiochian, we’re so glad to have you in our community of innovators and activists determined to make a lasting, positive impact on the world.
Antioch University is a special institution. Together, we get to carry on our institution’s rich history of social justice work, innovative and socially engaged learning, and commitment to academic excellence. We educate to advance the common good in our home communities and around the world. I believe that this work is profoundly important. It’s what brings us together. And it’s by joining our efforts together that we find joy in our work and make the most progress.
Antioch’s first president was Horace Mann, the abolitionist and foremost advocate of public education in the U.S. Mann understood that there can be no social justice without democracy, and he argued again and again that there can be no viable democracy without education. Today, this connection between education and justice is as essential to Antioch’s DNA as it was in 1852, and that’s why our mission is to provide learner-centered education to empower students with the knowledge and skills to lead meaningful lives and to advance social, racial, economic, and environmental justice. We know that a well-educated populace is essential to a strong democracy, and we strive to play our part in supporting the system that underpins our self-determination and civil rights.
Antiochians have accomplished many victories over the last 173 years. But we’re not resting on our laurels. Our students, alumni, and faculty are engaged today in critical efforts to advance democracy, promote the common good, and achieve victories for humanity. We are delighted that you will be a part of this work.
As an institution of higher education, we have a moral obligation to stand up for our values and to advocate for change when it is needed. Our work must extend beyond our classrooms and into our communities through engaged scholarship, advocacy, and service. It also requires that we critically consider our own structures and pedagogies. We are working toward becoming a genuinely anti-racist university. As we support peaceful protesters and demonstrators in the Movement for Black Lives who have raised their collective voices against racial injustice, systemic racism, and white supremacy, we are engaging in honest self-assessment and taking corrective action and affirmative steps toward becoming the anti-racist and pro-inclusive institution we all want Antioch University to be.
We want for your time at Antioch to be filled with tremendous opportunities, exciting new challenges, and the support of an encouraging community. You will study with faculty who are renowned scholars and highly regarded as leaders in their fields. Whether you are enrolled in an in-person, online, hybrid, or low-residency program, I am confident that you will experience academic excellence and student-centered learning within a supportive and diverse university.
In this catalog, you will find answers to many of your questions regarding admissions, curriculum, university policies, and procedures. You will find details about an inspiring range of academic programs, including certificates, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees. You will find information on degree requirements, courses, and the academic calendar. We are also including resources to help you flourish, including details about library services, tutoring assistance, and support services. The catalog is a roadmap for your journey to acquire the skills and knowledge you need to be successful during your time at Antioch University and beyond.
Each Antiochian has a different story of what brought you to this moment, at this specific university. These individual stories, brought together, create our community of caring and thoughtful people who are challenging the status quo and working to advance social, racial, environmental, and economic justice.
Today, the world needs you more than ever.
We are glad you are here.
Sincerely,
William R. Groves
