EDUC-5720: Language, Culture and Equity Language

This course will provide teacher candidates with the foundational theories and skills to explore the relationships between language, identity, and schooling. This course is grounded in the premise that language and identity are mutually constitutive, and that their relationship is fundamental to teachers’ and students’ teaching and learning experiences. Teacher candidates will explore the various linguistic identities that teachers and students take up - or are forced to take up - in schools and the consequences of those identities for students, teachers, schools, and communities. Finally, teacher candidates will consider the potential of classrooms to support students in cultivating identities that reflect the powerful and political linguistic resources of all communities.
