SOJ-4340: Activism, Art, and Social Justice

This transdisciplinary course empowers students to investigate the intersections between systems of oppression, activism and art and to discern how these may beget inventive tactics that confront, expose, mock, provoke, and/or shock injustice. Together we will consider the historical, political and aesthetic underpinnings of arts that are associated with justice causes or movements: Antiracism, economic equity, the environment, and the human rights of indigenous communities, LGBTQ individuals, migrants and women. Students will learn ways to reflect on these dimensions from Postcolonial and Queer Theory perspectives and to use their current academic concentration as an
additional lens to immerse themselves in course material.
