ATR-5120: Orthopedic Assessment 2: Upper Extremity

This course offers an in-depth examination of orthopedic assessment techniques for upper extremity injuries and conditions, focusing on the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, cervical spine, and concussion management. Students will develop the clinical skills necessary for effective patient evaluation, diagnosis, and care planning using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. Emphasis is placed on integrating evidence-based practice, health informatics, social determinants of health and quality assurance measures into clinical decision-making. Key areas of focus include: Comprehensive orthopedic assessment of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, and cervical spine. Evaluation and management of concussions and brain injuries, including neurocognitive, vestibular, and oculomotor assessments. Development of patient-centered care plans that incorporate patient-reported outcomes and clinical assessments. Mastery of clinical documentation, Electronic Health Records (EHRs), ICD coding, and healthcare informatics to support patient care. Implementation of quality assurance and improvement practices, including documentation audits and the design of quality improvement projects. Integration of ethical principles and legal regulations in clinical practice. Collaborative care strategies with interdisciplinary healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. Hands-on clinical labs, practical examinations, and simulation experiences will reinforce clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills. By the conclusion of this course, students will be proficient in performing comprehensive upper extremity assessments and developing holistic, evidence-based treatment plans that align with professional practice standards in athletic training
