This course provides students with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in managing complex medical emergencies and delivering critical interventions in athletic training settings. Emphasizing life-saving skills, ethical decision-making, and patient-centered care, students will develop the competencies necessary to evaluate and manage life-threatening and emergent conditions. The course integrates both physical and mental health crisis management while promoting collaboration with interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Key areas of focus include: Advanced assessment and management of critical conditions such as cardiac and respiratory compromise, cervical spine injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and severe musculoskeletal injuries. Proficient use of emergency medical equipment, including advanced airway adjuncts, supplemental oxygen devices, splinting and casting techniques, and wound care supplies. Management of acute medical conditions, including diabetes (glucometer use, glucagon administration), asthma (inhalers, nebulizers), anaphylaxis (epinephrine auto-injector use), and drug overdoses (naloxone administration). Implementation of evidence-based strategies for managing exertional sickling, rhabdomyolysis, hyponatremia, and environmental conditions such as heat illness and hypothermia. Identification, referral, and support for patients with behavioral health conditions, including suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, mania, eating disorders, and attention deficit disorders. Development of custom prophylactic, assistive, and restrictive devices, including advanced taping, splinting, protective padding, and casting techniques. Integration of quality assurance systems and adherence to legal and ethical standards, including HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA, and BOC guidelines for emergency care. Hands-on practice through lab experiences, simulated emergency scenarios, and reflective learning will prepare students to confidently respond to complex medical emergencies. By the end of this course, students will demonstrate the skills and judgment required to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered emergency care in alignment with professional standards in athletic training.
