ATR-5410: Clinical Experience I: Lower Extremity Evaluation and Evidence Based Practice Skills

This course serves as the entry point for students’ first formal clinical experience in athletic training. Students will be immersed in real-world clinical settings where they will apply foundational knowledge and skills in the evaluation and management of lower extremity injuries, recognizing individual social determinants of health. Through direct patient care under the supervision of a preceptor, students will gain hands-on experience in clinical decision-making, patient communication, and evidence-based practice. Key areas of focus include: Orthopedic evaluation of the lower extremity, including foot, ankle, knee, hip, low back, and abdomen. Application of evidence-based practice to inform clinical decision-making and patient care strategies. Development and implementation of Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and emergent care for conditions such as heat illness, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, and musculoskeletal injuries. Hands-on experience with taping, splinting, protective equipment fitting, and emergency response simulations. Integration of health informatics, clinical documentation, and ICD coding for accurate patient care management. Emphasis on professional communication, cultural competency, and ethical practice in collaborative healthcare environments. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, simulated patient encounters, and case study presentations, students will enhance their clinical reasoning, communication, and critical thinking skills. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to deliver safe, evidence-based care aligned with professional standards and best practices in athletic training, while successfully completing their first clinical fieldwork experience.
