ATR-5420: Clinical Experience II: Upper Extremity Evaluation and Therapeutic Modalities

Course Description:This course provides students with their second clinical experience in athletic training, focusing on the evaluation and management of upper extremity injuries and the application of therapeutic modalities. Building on foundational clinical skills, students will engage in real-world clinical settings under the supervision of a preceptor, where they will advance their competencies in patient assessment, identifying social determinants of health, treatment planning, and evidence-based care. Key areas of focus include: Comprehensive orthopedic evaluation of the upper extremity, including the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, cervical spine, and head. Selection and application of therapeutic modalities to support recovery and enhance patient outcomes. Development of patient-centered care plans using patient-reported outcomes and clinician-rated measures to guide treatment decisions and discharge planning. Application of health informatics, including the use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), ICD coding, and data security protocols for accurate documentation and clinical decision-making. Emphasis on effective communication with patients, families, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders, alongside ethical and culturally competent patient care. Integration of social determinants of health and health literacy into patient education and care strategies. Students will participate in simulated emergency scenarios, case study analyses, and interdisciplinary collaboration exercises to refine their clinical reasoning, communication, and hands-on skills. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care and complete their second supervised clinical experience in athletic training.
