ATR-6000: Medical and Pharmacological Conditions In Athletic Training

This course provides an in-depth exploration of general medical conditions and pharmacological applications relevant to athletic training practice. Students will gain foundational knowledge in the evaluation, management, and referral of patients with diverse medical conditions, integrating evidence-based strategies, health equity, and collaborative care models. The course emphasizes the safe and effective use of pharmacological agents, patient education, and adherence to legal and ethical healthcare practices. Key areas of focus include: Comprehensive assessment and management of acute and chronic medical conditions commonly encountered in athletic training, including cardiac and respiratory compromise, diabetes, environmental illnesses, and musculoskeletal injuries. Application of diagnostic and laboratory tests (e.g., imaging, blood work, urinalysis, electrocardiograms) to inform clinical decision-making and treatment planning. Education on the appropriate use of pharmacological agents, including indications, contraindications, dosing, interactions, and adverse effects. Legal and ethical administration of medications and therapeutic agents under the direction of licensed healthcare providers, adhering to HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA, and BOC Standards of Professional Practice. Identification, referral, and support of patients with behavioral health conditions, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and other mental health concerns. Development of strategies to mitigate long-term health risks (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoarthritis) through preventive care and health promotion. Integration of patient education programs focused on nutrition, hydration, substance use prevention, and self-care to engage patients and support recovery. Collaboration with physicians and healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. Utilization of biometrics and physiological monitoring systems to guide preventive care, clinical interventions, and performance enhancement. Through case studies, hands-on learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration, students will develop the clinical reasoning and decision-making skills necessary to manage medical conditions and pharmacological treatments in athletic training settings. By the end of this course, students will be prepared to deliver safe, ethical, and effective medical care in alignment with professional standards.
