ATR-6410: Clinical Immersion I: Ethics and Certification Readiness

This course marks the first full-time immersive clinical experience (semester long) for students, providing the opportunity to be fully integrated into all aspects of athletic training under the direct supervision of a clinical preceptor. Students will engage in comprehensive patient care, gaining hands-on experience in the evaluation, treatment, and management of diverse patient populations. Emphasis is placed on ethical decision-making, professional conduct, and preparation for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. Key areas of focus include: Full immersion in the day-to-day operations of an athletic training setting, actively participating in injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. Development and implementation of a patient-centered clinical case study using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. Completion of an approved immersion project that demonstrates applied learning and integration of evidence-based practice with a focus on social justice. Application of ethical standards, legal regulations, and professional guidelines in clinical practice. Advanced collaboration with healthcare professionals, including communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams. Integration of health informatics and quality assurance practices in patient care and documentation. Preparation for the BOC certification exam through applied clinical skills and critical thinking exercises. By the conclusion of this course, students will have gained significant real-world experience, enhancing their clinical reasoning and professional competencies while demonstrating readiness for advanced clinical practice and certification in athletic training.
