CFT-6860: Substance Use and Behavioral Dependencies in Systemic Therapy

This course addresses the structure and dynamics of relationships and families affected by addiction. Students will examine theoretical perspectives of families and addiction through a systemic lens, along with assessments and interventions using various family therapy approaches. The course delves into major substance-related disorders, co-occurring disorders, and other addictive processes, exploring their etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Special emphasis is given to evidence-based Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and the identification of referral resources. Cultural sensitivity, legal aspects of substance abuse, crisis management and suicide assessment, and the role of community resources are also discussed, enabling a holistic approach to this complex issue. This course will also discuss group therapy modalities as relevant to substance use and behavioral dependency clinical concerns. Art Therapy Specialization Note - Students in the AT specialization will cover CAAHEP required content, including: A.2. Theoretical Approaches, and B.5. Assessment, Appraisal & Evaluation.
