APS-3990D: Applied Studies Seminar: Media, Influence, and Society

This professional, hybrid-format seminar is open to both APS and BA Liberal Arts and provides an opportunity for students to connect their technical, professional and personal knowledge to current issues related to Media Influence and Society. Together we will analyze the origins, purposes, and impact of the media from an interdisciplinary, postcolonial perspective, informed by radical scholars and practitioners. Some of the issues we will reflect upon during the course include: the evolution of communications media and their influence on culture, politics, economy, and new professional markets in the 21st Century. We’ll also attempt to discuss current media trends, dilemmas and speculate about their future directions and impact on society. Because this is an Applied Studies Seminar, students will be asked to reflect upon what they’re learning and apply it directly to their professional, personal, or political interests, depending on their current program of study.
