BUS-3990: Applied Studies Sem: Leadershp

The non-profit sector represents a significant portion of the US economy, drawing people dedicated to serving in a variety of fields. Many individuals will at some point work for, volunteer for, and serve on the board of a non-profit organization. Examples include affordable therapy clinics, youth organizations, LGBTQ rights organizations, climate justice advocacy groups, experimental theaters and art galleries, faith-based organizations, and homeless services groups. This course addresses the question: how do nonprofits raise the resources necessary to support their mission? Students will become conversant in the tools needed to contribute to a variety of jobs, volunteer, and board roles within a nonprofit organization.


This course will explore how nonprofits raise or earn the resources necessary to support an organization’s mission. We will examine competencies that are important to successful nonprofit advancement, including fundraising and development strategies. First, we will Identify the funding sources common among nonprofits. Second, we will identify the customary strategies by which nonprofits promote themselves. Finally, this course will provide a detailed examination of the “development cycle” and how to integrate it in practical nonprofit environments.
