Program Overview

The Self-designed concentration can be completed in 5-7 semesters with fully online and low residency options available. Students can begin in any semester and typically take 3 credits per term. Optional summer classes are available face-to-face in Keene, NH. All students must complete the 15 Core Courses listed below and their remaining 18 credits are to be designed in conjunction with their academic adviser.

To earn the M.Ed. in Foundations of Education: Self-designed, students must successfully complete a total of 33 credits as outlined below.

Core Courses - 15 Semester Credits


If pursuing the Practice Pathway take the following (15 semester credits) If pursuing the Research Pathway take the following (15 semester credits)

Practicum Courses - 9 semester credits

EDR 6200: Practicum-Equity & Change    (3 semester credits)

EDR 6920: Practicum: Child Study   (3 semester credits)

EDR 6940: Practicum: Curriculum  (3 semester credits)

Research Courses - 6 semester credits

EDR 6400: Foundations of Research   (3 semester credits)

EDR 6401: Research Capstone   (3 semester credits)

Coalition for the Common Good (CCG) Core Courses - 6 semester credits 

EDT 5455: Educational Philosophy, Curriculum, and Social Justice    (3 semester credits)

OR

EDT 5456: Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy    (3 semester credits)

AND

EDT 6265: Human Development and Effective Pedagogy    (3 semester credits)

OR 

EDT 5360: Childhood and Nature    (3 semester credits)

Self-Designed Courses


Students must take 18 additional elective credits.

Classes should be chosen in accordance with students’ advising plans, which are developed by students and their advisors. Courses may be chosen from any Education Department, Campus, or University course (with appropriate permissions for courses outside the AUNE Education Department) or through Supervised Independent Study when deemed appropriate by the student and advisor.
