MEd in Foundations of Education: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Educators in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program gain social, cultural and linguistic understandings, examine theoretical foundations, and study current policies and practices necessary to lead and advocate for English Language Learners in educational settings. Educators learn and apply evidence-based instructional and assessment strategies to support, differentiate, and accommodate English Language Learners in mainstream classrooms and specialized learning contexts. 

This program can be completed in 5-7 semesters with fully online and low residency options available. Students typically take 3-6 credits per term. 

Required for admission: 

  1. Completion of the Ohio TESOL Endorsement courses (listed below) through Coalition for the Common Good approved institution (Otterbein or Antioch) (12 credits, plus 50 clinical hours).
  2. Current Ohio teacher licensure. Expired Ohio Teaching License may be considered with permission of the Executive Director, School of Education.

Plan of Study


To earn the MEd in Foundations of Education: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, entering students apply 12 credits completed in the Ohio TESOL Endorsement program at a Coalition for the Common Good approved institution (Otterbein or Antioch), then they must successfully complete 21 credits as outlined below:

Research Pathway


If pursuing the Research Pathway take the following (15 semester credits)

Elective Courses (6 semester credits)


Students must take 6 additional elective credits. Classes should be chosen in accordance with students’ advising plans which are developed by students and their advisers. Courses may be chosen from any Education Department, Campus, or University course (with appropriate permissions for courses outside the AUNE Education Department) or through Supervised Independent Study when deemed appropriate by the student and adviser.
