Program Overview

The Antioch University Seattle drama therapy specialization is a non-residential online semester based program with one four day residency each year. The program is broad-based, with a depth of content that includes well-integrated and comprehensive curriculum. Nourishing the professional identity of our students as drama therapists is a priority. Incorporated in our Drama Therapy skills and principles are Antioch mission-driven values that include multicultural attunement and emphasis on social justice as essential measures of excellence. Our program provides broad-based exposure to different types of drama therapy including Therapeutic Improvisation, Autobiographical Therapeutic Performance and Self Revelatory Performance, Integrative Five Phase Model, Playback Theater, The Story Within, Performance/storytelling, Role Theory, Theatre of the Oppressed and international cooperative engagement.

The Antioch Drama Therapy program is unique in that it offers students training in drama therapy together with training in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Students complete Clinical Mental Health Counseling coursework, integrating drama therapy as part of additional concentration-specific training, which includes a practicum and internship. This allows students to seek licensing in Washington or other locations after graduation. Students also can use their drama therapy education to become provisional registered drama therapists (PRDTs) and then registered drama therapists (RDTs) with the North American Drama Therapy Association.
