Program Overview
A growing number of communities offer innovative, justice-minded food and farm efforts that raise awareness; increase access to culturally appropriate foods for all; and take action to strengthen sustainable agriculture and local food systems. Access to land, workers rights, environmental justices, climate impacts, energy descent, extreme poverty and rising rates of obesity among youth and adults have led to outcries for social change, justice and equity. Through this certificate, gain skills, experiences and understandings of how food justice and community-based education can enhance personal and communal well-being, particularly among people and places most impacted by climate change and other social, economic, and ecological injustices. Students completing this certificate have gone on to serve as leaders and change agents in a wide range of community contexts, as well as farm and food sovereignty efforts in non-profits and higher education. They serve as garden educators, program directors, sustainability coordinators, and food justice leaders in affordable housing, higher education, K-12 schools, nonprofits, small businesses, corporate contexts and more. AUNE’s Community Garden Connections (CGC) has several robust food justice and garden education programs to complement this certificate, including community-based gardens, workplace gardens, and campus gardens. The certificate can be completed within 32 weeks. Food Justice and Resilient Communities certificate courses meet one day/week or as intensives, aligned with our current Environmental Studies’ delivery models.
