Psychology Major and Minor Areas of Concentration

The BA in Liberal Studies Psychology Concentration began at Antioch with the university’s inception in 1972. Since that time, the concentration has provided AULA’s diverse adult-learner population with a comprehensive and cutting-edge education in psychological theory and practice, while emphasizing the core issues of social justice and intercultural studies. Our curriculum continues to train students in numerous areas within the field of psychology, including clinical work and counseling, case management, industrial/organizational psychology, and the treatment of substance abuse. Additionally, students receive preparation for graduate studies as well as a variety of related careers, in education, nonprofit work, community organizing, and social work.

Students must complete a minimum of 40 units for a Major Area of Concentration, and a  minimum of 20 units for a Minor Area of Concentration. The faculty recommends that at least one half of the units counted toward the concentration be upper division.

Curriculum

Our core curriculum falls into the following four categories, with courses offered in regular rotation. Students in the Psychology Concentration are advised to build these courses into their programs of study to the extent that scheduling allows, with the two identified “gateway” courses - HUM-3710 The Politics of Psychology and PSY-3270A: Critical Psychology - highly recommended for all psychology students.

Internships

Our Psychology Concentration has established relationships with numerous clinical settings, social advocacy groups, and human service organizations throughout the Los Angeles area. Students in the Psychology Concentration have the option of completing up to 6 internship units to fulfill their Community-Based Learning requirement, and more than 6 units if desired. These placements enable students to gain firsthand experience and to connect classroom learning with practical applications in the field.

Fast Track into the Graduate Psychology Program

Through the Fast Track program, eligible students may earn 9-12 quarter units toward a Master of Arts in Psychology (MAP) Program during their final one or two quarters in the BA Program. Fast Track units count towards graduation requirements for both the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree, thus saving time and tuition costs.

Additional Info

In accordance with American Psychological Association (APA) recommendations, students in the Psychology Concentration are advised to take a broad range of liberal arts courses. Specifically, the APA recommends courses in the arts, humanities, science, philosophy, and quantitative methods in addition to psychology.
