BA in Applied Arts & Media - General Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts & Media degree at AUSB is ideal for people with technical skills in art, design, and media fields such as makeup design, video editing and post-production, or set design who want to more fully understand the context and business side of their industry. The major focuses on preparing students to use arts in today’s media-rich environment.

In this program, you’ll view art from a historical and cultural perspective while exploring how the use of art and media has evolved into a platform central to effective marketing and communication. You’ll gain crucial skills and problem-solving strategies specific to the arts and media fields that will make you a more effective professional.

Breakdown of Major Requirements


  • 21 quarter units of transfer credit in a technical or professional cohesive area

  • 24 quarter units of upper division coursework at Antioch that includes:

    • 12 units of Major Core coursework 

    • 12 units of Professional Core coursework

  • 3 quarters units for LIB-3081 Senior Capstone Project

  • 6 quarter units of additional Community-Based Learning

Community-based Learning


Students in the Applied Studies major must earn 6 upper division units (typically 2 activities) of Community-based Learning related to their major. Community-based Learning includes a diverse array of options, from internships to prior learning for credit to capstone courses that involve a direct connection with community. Students are strongly encouraged to select internship placements relevant to their interests and career goals from Antioch’s Internship Office, or to seek out a unique internship placement with the support and approval of Antioch’s Internship Office. Similarly, students may consult with their faculty advisor about major-related prior learning projects, which can not only deepen understanding around students’ lived experiences, but also save on tuition costs.
