Program Overview

The Certificate in Transdisciplinary Studies is a 13-credit self-designed certificate program to cater to students who prefer a more flexible commitment than the existing 36-credit Liberal Arts MA program. Students will receive a certificate in transdisciplinary studies with a specialization in their self-designed focus. This initiative enables students to delve into individualized graduate-level coursework without a substantial commitment, offering them a valuable glimpse into advanced studies. The certificate is designed for the reflective, committed, and self-directed learner who seeks to effect social, organizational, or personal change. Students pursue their studies through one foundation course, choice of self-designed courses with faculty, seminars, or Intra-University, and one certificate project. Our individualized approach makes it possible to combine graduate education with professional, personal, and community commitments.

The Certificate in Transdisciplinary Studies is designed for students aspiring to enhance their teaching and research capabilities. This certificate program offers a multidisciplinary approach, allowing students to explore diverse fields of study and integrate knowledge across traditional academic boundaries. By engaging in transdisciplinary coursework, students develop critical thinking skills and gain a comprehensive understanding of complex issues. This certificate is particularly beneficial for individuals interested in pursuing an academic career or seeking to broaden their expertise in interdisciplinary research.

Plan of Study

Seminars, Intra-University, or Individualized courses (9 credits)

Seminars from the Field of Study

Seminars are courses that faculty members in the program have designed. Seminars are small, interdisciplinary classes that have asynchronous discussion forums and synchronous tutorials.

IntraUniversity Courses

Students can also enroll in graduate courses in the University system if they meet the prerequisites and there is space.

Individualized Courses

With guidance from their Faculty Advisor and Mentor (optional), students identify faculty members to teach courses in the student’s individualized area of study. Occasionally, students may request to study with an external scholar or practitioner, someone who is not on the Antioch faculty. Students submit their individualized course syllabi to their Faculty Advisors and Mentors (optional) for review.
