Program Overview

The Teacher Education Program (TEP) prepares teacher candidates to become reflective, community-oriented teachers. Upon successful completion of the program, candidates are recommended for a Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate with an Elementary Education Endorsement. TEP coursework includes a focus on multilingual students, and candidates may choose to take two additional courses focusing on multilingual students. Upon successful completion of these additional courses, candidates are recommended for a Washington State English Language Learner Endorsement.

TEP emphasizes justice-oriented pedagogy, student-centered learning, and innovative program design. Candidates learn to:

  • Plan and implement curriculum that meets the needs of a variety of learners
  • Teach in diverse classroom settings
  • Manage the material and human dynamics of the classroom
  • Nurture the holistic development of all students
  • Reflect on one’s role as a teacher
  • Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, parents and community members
  • Assume leadership roles to advocate for children

The TEP begins with a summer intensive during the first quarter of the program. Candidates complete their student teaching and continue their coursework during the second, third and fourth quarters of the program. After the first quarter, the program is designed to offer different timeline options. Candidates may complete all requirements for the Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate and optional Washington State ELL Endorsement in four quarters. Alternatively, candidates may complete program requirements in phases. In a phased approach, candidates complete their certification requirements first. These can be completed on a one- or two-year timeline. Candidates may then return at a later time to complete the optional ELL Endorsement at their own pace.

Extended-Timeline Program

Certificate in Teaching - extended timeline

Location: AU Seattle
Credits for Degree: 35 quarter credits
Standard Mode of Instruction: In person and distance
Standard time to completion: 24 months

The extended timeline program is designed for students with jobs or other obligations that make full time graduate school challenging. In the extended timeline program, you can take up to two years to complete the program. However, you may complete the program sooner if you are able. In contrast, the one-year program cannot be completed in a shorter timeline and, if needed, may only be extended for two quarters. If you are not sure which route is right for you, please make an appointment with the Director, who can advise you.

In rare cases, students may change programs once they are admitted and have started the program. This change is typically honored when there are extenuating circumstances, such as a change in work demands or illness of a student or family member. A program change can only be made if the student is in satisfactory academic standing.
