URB-4900AW: Community Organizing

The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the literature, principles, and practices of community organizing from academic and community based perspectives. Through lecture, class discussion and a written assignment, students will develop their understanding of the practice of community organizing with an emphasis on social power dynamics. Students will develop their capacity to think critically about these literatures and practices. In addition, each student will develop their knowledge of organizing efforts in the Los Angeles area on an issue of professional interest through the written assignment.
